Apocalypto 2006

Apocalypto is a 2006 epic film directed by Mel Gibson. Set in Central America, during the declining period of the Maya civilization, Apocalypto depicts the journey of a Mesoamerican tribesman who must escape human sacrifice and rescue his family after the capture and destruction of his village.

The film features a cast of Native American descent, and its Yucatec Maya dialogue is accompanied by subtitles.

The film begins with an epigraph from Will Durant: "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within."
While hunting tapir in the Mesoamerican jungle in the early 16th Century, Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), his father Flint Sky (Morris Birdyellowhead), and their fellow tribesmen encounter a procession of traumatized and fearful refugees. Speaking in Yucatec Maya, the procession's leader explains that their lands have been ravaged, and asks for Flint Sky's permission to pass through the jungle. When Jaguar Paw and his tribesmen return to their village, Flint Sky tells his son not to let the procession's state of fear seep into him. At night, the tribe's elder tells the village a fable of man forever unable to fill his want, despite having been given the capabilities of all of the animals. The villagers follow the story with music and dance, leaving Jaguar Paw to ponder.

The next morning, Jaguar Paw wakes from a nightmare to see strangers enter the village and set the huts ablaze. The raiders, led by Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo), attack and subdue the villagers. Jaguar Paw slips out with his pregnant wife Seven (Dalia Hernández) and his little son Turtles Run, lowering them on a vine into a small cave (a chultun, shaped something like a well) to hide them. Jaguar Paw returns to the village to fight the raiders but is subdued with the rest of the tribe. A raider whom Jaguar Paw attacks and almost kills, the vicious Middle Eye (Gerardo Taracena), slits Flint Sky's throat while Jaguar Paw helplessly watches. His last words to him are to not be afraid. Middle Eye mocks Jaguar Paw by calling him 'Almost' for not being able to kill him. Before the raiders leave the village with their prisoners, one suspicious raider severs the vine leading into the ground cave, trapping Jaguar Paw's wife and son within, in part due to Jaguar Paw's staring gaze towards the cave.

The raiders and their captives trek toward the Maya city, encountering razed forests, falling trees, failed maize crops, slaves producing plaster, and the sick and dying. A small diseased girl prophesies that a man bringing the jaguar will bring the raiders to those who will scratch out the earth and end their world. In the city's outskirts, the female captives are sold as slaves and the males are escorted to the top of a step pyramid. The high priest sacrifices several captives by decapitating them after pulling out their beating hearts. When Jaguar Paw is about to be sacrificed, a solar eclipse (also prophesied by the girl) stays the priest's hand. He looks at the king, sitting nearby, and the two share a smile while the people below panic at the phenomenon. The priest declares the sun god Kukulkan is satisfied with the sacrifices. He asks Kukulkan to let light return to the world and the eclipse passes. The crowd cheers in amazement and the priest orders that the remaining captives be disposed of.

Zero Wolf takes the villagers to an amphitheater. The captives are released in pairs and forced to run the length of the open space within the amphitheater to give Zero Wolf's men target practice, with a cynical promise of freedom should they reach the end of the field alive. However, Zero Wolf's son, Cut Rock, is sent to the end of the field to "dispose of" any survivors. The raiders target them with javelins, arrows, and slingstones as they run. Jaguar Paw is struck by an arrow through the abdomen but reaches the end of the field and breaks off the arrowhead. As Cut Rock approaches to finish him off with an obsidian blade, Jaguar Paw shoves the broken arrow into Cut Rock's throat. As Cut Rock bleeds out with Zero Wolf easing him into the next life, Jaguar Paw escapes through a withered maize field and an open mass grave. The enraged Zero Wolf and his raiders pursue Jaguar Paw into the jungle and back toward Jaguar Paw's home. Along the way, one of the raiders is killed by a black jaguar that has been disturbed by Jaguar Paw. As he flees, Jaguar Paw jumps over a high waterfall and survives, declaring from the riverbank below that the raiders are now in his homelands.

Zero Wolf's raiders jump the waterfall as well, then fall to both the forest's elements and Jaguar Paw's traps. A heavy rain sets in, which begins to flood the ground cave in which Jaguar Paw's wife and son are still trapped. Jaguar Paw kills one raider with a poisoned dart and bludgeons Middle Eye in hand-to-hand combat and kills Zero Wolf by leading him into a trap meant for hunting tapir. He is chased by two remaining raiders out to a beach where they encounter Hernan Cortez and his men making their way ashore in boats. The amazement of the raiders allows Jaguar Paw to flee. He returns into the forest to pull his wife and son out of the flooded pit where they are hiding around the time when Seven gives birth to a child. He returns in time to save the family, and sees that his wife has given birth to a healthy second son. As the family walks near the coastline, Jaguar Paw's wife asks what the strange objects near the shore are. Jaguar Paw responds only that "they bring men." Jaguar Paw and his family go deeper into the forest, "to seek a new beginning," leaving the Spanish who are anchored in ships off the beach.

On June 13, 1980, a young Jason Voorhees (Caleb Guss) witnesses his mother (Nana Visitor) beheaded by a camp counselor (Stephanie Rhodes) who was trying to escape Mrs. Voorhees's murderous rampage around Camp Crystal Lake. Approximately 30 years later, a group of vacationing friends—Wade (Jonathan Sadowski), Richie (Ben Feldman), Mike (Nick Mennell), Whitney (Amanda Righetti) and Amanda (America Olivo)—arrive at Crystal Lake on a camping trip to find some marijuana that was planted in the woods. As Mike and Whitney explore the abandoned Crystal Lake camp, an adult Jason (Derek Mears) begins to kill the rest of the group one-by-one. Jason also kills Mike, but instead of doing the same to Whitney he decides to kidnap her because she resembles his mother at a young age.

Six weeks later, Trent (Travis Van Winkle), along with his girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), and their friends Bree (Julianna Guill), Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Chelsea (Willa Ford), Nolan (Ryan Hansen) and Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta) arrive at Trent's summer cabin, which sits on Crystal Lake. The group is unaware of the events that occurred a few weeks prior. Additionally, Clay Miller (Jared Padalecki) arrives in town to search Crystal Lake for his sister Whitney, whom he believes to be alive. Clay eventually makes his way to Trent's cabin, where Jenna agrees to help him look for his sister on the other side of the lake. As Clay and Jenna search for clues to Whitney's disappearance, Jason kills Nolan and Chelsea, who are waterskiing on the lake. Clay and Jenna reach the old Crystal Lake campgrounds, where they witness Jason hauling a dead body into one of the abandoned camp houses.

The pair run back to warn the others about Jason, who arrives shortly after them and cuts the power to the cabin. After killing Chewie and Lawrence, who ventured outside the house, Jason sneaks inside the cabin and kills Bree. Trent, Clay and Jenna escape the house, but Trent is killed when he reaches the main road. Jason then chases Clay and Jenna back to the campgrounds, where Clay discovers Jason's lair and finds his sister chained to the wall. Clay frees Whitney, and all three attempt to escape as Jason arrives. The trio find an exit, but Jenna is killed before she can get out. Jason comes after Clay and Whitney, but Whitney uses Jason's love and memory of his mother—by pretending to be Mrs. Voorhees—to distract him long enough to stab him in the chest with his own machete. Afterward, Clay dumps Jason's lifeless body into the lake. Before he and Whitney can leave, Jason bursts through the wooden dock and grabs Whitney.

2012

2012 is a 2009 science fiction disaster film based loosely on the 2012 phenomenon and directed by Roland Emmerich. The film stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson. The film was distributed by Columbia Pictures. Filming began in August 2008 in Vancouver.

The film briefly references Mayanism, the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and the 2012 phenomenon in its portrayal of cataclysmic events unfolding in the year 2012. Due to solar flare bombardment the Earth's core begins heating up at an unprecedented rate. This results in a series of Doomsday event scenarios plunging the world into chaos, such as California falling into the Pacific Ocean, the eruption of the Yellowstone National Park caldera, shifting of the continents by crustal displacement, Megatsunami impacts along every coast line on the Earth, and the flooding of the entire planet. The film centers around an ensemble cast of characters as they narrowly escape multiple catastrophes in an effort to reach ships in the Tibetan Himalayan Mountains, along with scientists and governments of the world who are attempting to save as many lives as they can before the disasters ensue.

Reviews of the film have been mixed, with several critics pointing out the improbability of some of the Apocalyptic scenarios depicted in the film. The film also utilized a viral marketing campaign that has fallen under much criticism with the fictional organization Institute for Human Continuity, a fictitious book written by Jackson Curtis entitled Farewell Atlantis, and streaming media, blog updates and radio broadcasts from the apocalyptic zealot Charlie Frost at his website entitled This Is The End.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra 2009

The film opens in France, in 1641. The Scotsman Klan McCullen has been accused of selling weaponry to both the Scots and French. Rather than being executed for treason, the jury brands his face with a white-hot mask in order to humiliate him. In the near future, weapons expert James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) has created a nanotechnology-based weapon capable of destroying an entire city. His company MARS sells four warheads to NATO, and the U.S. Army is tasked with delivering the warheads. Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) are delivering the warheads when they are ambushed by the Baroness (Sienna Miller), who Duke recognized to be his ex-fiancee Ana Lewis. Duke and Ripcord are rescued by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). They take the warheads to The Pit, G.I. Joe's command center in North Africa, and upon arriving rendezvous with General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), the head of the G.I. Joe Team. Hawk takes command of the war-heads and excuses Duke and Ripcord, only to be convinced to have them join his group after Duke reveals that he knows the Baroness.

McCullen is revealed to be using the same nanotechnology to build an army of soldiers with the aid of the Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), planning on using the warheads to bring panic and bring about a new world order. Using a tracking device, McCullen locates the G.I. Joe base and sends Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-hun) and the Baroness to retrieve the warheads with assistance from Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), inflicting casualties on several G.I. Joe soldiers. After a fight, Storm Shadow and the Baroness retrieve the warheads and take them to Baron DeCobray, the Baroness's husband, for him to weaponize and use them to destroy the Eiffel Tower to serve as a showing of the warhead's destructive power. Making their way to Paris, the Joes pursue them through the streets but are unsuccessful in stopping them from launching the missile. Duke manages to hit the kill switch, but in doing so he is captured and taken to McCullen's base under the Arctic.

G.I. Joe locates the secret base and fly there as McCullen loads three missiles with nano-mite warheads. After Snake Eyes takes out one, Ripcord pursues the remaining missiles in a prototype Night Raven jet while Scarlett and her group infiltrate the base. While Scarlett and Snake Eyes attempt to shut down the Arctic base, with Heavy Duty leading an attack on Cobra's forces, Duke learns that the Doctor is Rex Lewis, Ana's brother believed to have been killed on a mission led by Duke four years ago. He was trapped in a bunker with Doctor Mindbender (Kevin O'Connor), disfigured in the blast which everyone presumed had killed him. The Baroness tries to free Duke but the Doctor reveals he has implanted her with nano-mites which has put her under his control for the past four years, admitting his amazement that she is resisting the programming. Attempting to kill Duke, McCullen ends up being facially burned as he flees with Rex to an escape vessel. Duke and the Baroness pursue him while the Joes fall back when Rex activated the base's self destruct sequence.

Rex then heals McCullen's burned face with nano-mites, encasing it in silver as he christens McCullen "Destro" and assumes the identity of Cobra Commander before they are captured by G.I. Joe soon after. On board the supercarrier USS Flagg, Baroness is placed in protective custody until they can remove the nano-mites from her body. Meanwhile, Zartan, having been earlier operated on by Rex, infiltrates the White House during the missile crisis and assumes the identity of the President of the United States (Jonathan Pryce).

My Girl and I 2005

My Girl and I is a 2005 South Korean film directed by Jeon Yun-su. It is a remake of the Japanese film Socrates in Love.

Song Hye Kyo's debut movie "My Girl and I" is a heartwarming story about true love and happiness. The film starts in modern day Korea where we see Kim Su Ho (Cha Tae-hyun) return to his hometown after ten years to attend a reunion with his high school friends. He sadly strolls as he hears a female voice in his head calling out his name.

The next scene shows us Su Ho's three friends celebrating and talking about Su Ho. They doubt that he'll attend their reunion because he apparently hasn't gotten over some girl. It is said that on that day of their reunion, it is the death anniversary of a girl named Su-eun. To everyone's surprise, Su Ho enters and warmly greets his friends.

After celebrating, the four friends go to a lighthouse where Su Ho's friend shouts, "Bae Su-eun, my friend's brain is small but is filled with endless thoughts of you. Please let my friend go." Su Ho becomes emotional and starts to cry.
The next scene is a flashback wherein a younger Su Ho is rescued from drowning by a pretty girl. Her beeper got lost in the process of rescuing him but she just walked away. Su Ho then wakes up and thinks that his friends had saved him from drowning.
The next scene leads us to a music class. Su Ho and his classmates were asked to sing in chorus. He sang normally just like the other students but was distracted when his classmate, Bae Su-eun started staring at him. Su Ho suddenly became conscious and curious at the same time. After all, Su-eun is the prettiest girl in their high school, so why should she show interest in the ordinary-looking Su Ho? Su-eun notices the expression on Su Ho's face and quickly looks away. Su Ho's classmate and friend sits in front of him, sighs and says "What will I do? I have to concentrate on my studies." He told Su Ho that Su-eun always stares at him in class. Su Ho just shrugged for he thought that Su-eun may actually be interested in him but was not.
After class, Su Ho and Su-eun pass by each other in the hallway. They were about to walk past each other when they got into each other's way. They repeatedly tried several methods so that they could easily pass but it often resulted in Su Ho blocking Su-eun's way and vice versa. Finally, Su Ho held Su-eun's shoulders and passed by the small space to Su-eun's right. Su Ho was about to walk away when Su-eun called him. She asked him to buy her a croquette (bread stuffed with vegetables or meat) which naturally surprised Su Ho. He knew that if he and Su-eun ate together, other people might think that they're going out and it would be hard for both of them but especially for him because Su-eun had many suitors from all over the school. But in the end, Su Ho still bought two croquettes and when the other students noticed, they immediately assumed that the two were dating.

Word spread fast and soon the captain of the Judo club who had his eyes set on Su-eun sought Su Ho. He threatened to beat Su Ho but Su Ho immediately said that he wasn't seeing Su-eun. By chance, Su-eun passed by and when the captain asked if she was seeing Su Ho, she quickly replied that they are indeed going out. The captain got really mad and threw Su Ho down the floor. Su Ho's friends arrived to rescue him and immediately they escaped.

Su Ho and Su-eun stayed by the boardwalk where a lighthouse stood. The two spoke for a while wherein Su-eun hinted to Su Ho that she saved him but he was really really slow minded and he couldn't comprehend what she was trying to say. Su-eun asked him to get her a beeper for she lost hers because of him. Su Ho didn't understand and she got irritated and called him a dummy. Later, they watched the sun set together.
Su Ho then walked Su-eun home and she wrote her beeper number on a piece of fruit for she was afraid that her parents and especially her strict and "scary" father would find out. Although her beeper was lost, she could still receive and leave messages on its system. That night, Su-eun and Su Ho confessed their feelings for each other.
The next day, Su Ho was called out of class because his grandfather supposedly collapsed. He quickly went to his grandfather's home and found him alive and looked normal. Turns out, he just faked a stroke so that he could share the story of his first love to Su Ho. Again, by chance, Su-eun arrived bringing Su Ho's bag. Although reluctant at first, Su Ho's grandfather shared his story to a complete stranger.
When he was young, Su Ho's grandfather joined the army and was assigned to a different region in Korea. He was separated from his first love, Soon-Im. He left her a necklace to remember him by.

Years passed and soon he became an undertaker. Once, he was asked to prepare a funeral and as it turned out, the dead man was Soon-Im's husband. They couldn't even say a word to each other and soon he married another woman, Su Ho's grandmother.
Su Ho then realizes that he loves Su-eun and he wishes for her to be his destiny so that they wouldn't suffer the same fate as his grandfather. Using a payphone, Su Ho left a message on Su-eun's beeper. In it he said that he wished she could be his destiny, completely unaware that she was behind him until she replied, "Me too."
From that day on, Su Ho and Su-eun officially became a couple.

Su Ho's friends proposed an outing--an overnight stay in Fog Island. As Su Ho and Su-eun arrived together at the pier, he finds out that his friends tricked him so that he and Su-eun would have some time alone. He made up lies to cover up but she was smart and knew that it was only the two of them alone. At first, Su-eun seemed mad but then she herself bought two tickets to Fog Island.

At the island their love deepened even more. One night, they had their first kiss.
Things were going so well until one day, Su-eun fainted and her body started to weaken. Su Ho rushed her to the hospital and tried to live his life normally.
He visited her everyday. What he thought was just simple anemia turned out to be leukemia. Su Eun was going to die even if the doctors try to operate on her. Her one last wish was to go back to Fog Island, where their love bloomed.
Another woman also had a last wish before she died--Soon-Im. She wished to be reunited with her first love, Su Ho's grandfather. He even prepared her funeral and was reunited with his first love, the woman he had loved for 50 years.

One day, when Su Ho visited the hospital, Su-eun expressed her last wish and before she could say anything else, he brought out two ferry tickets for Fog Island. On the day of their departure, a typhoon struck and all trips were cancelled. Su Ho desperately tried to convince the authorities to let them travel but to no avail.
As he was arguing with the management, Su-eun felt even weaker and she knew it was already her time. She said her last words and wished for Su Ho in her mind. As he was apologizing to her about the storm, she collapsed into Su Ho and died.

Ten years later, Su Ho returned to Fog Island and found Su-eun's bag in the lost and found section. Inside the bag was her diary which she updated everyday. There was one entry that was written during their trip to Fog Island. It seems Su-Eun had planted seeds in the hill during their visit and promised herself that when those seeds became flowers, she'll come back with Su Ho to that island, year after year, after year. The hill covered with flowers will be her gift to him.

Su Ho quickly went to the hill and was overjoyed to see it covered with purple flowers. He felt Bae Su-eun's presence around him as memories of his first and true love filled his heart.

Lover's Concerto 2002

Lovers' Concerto is a 2002 South Korean film directed by Lee Han. It is a romantic melodrama dealing with friendship, jealousy and the ties that bind.

The film starts with Ji-hwan opening a handmade letter. It has no address or name written on it. Inside, is a black-and-white photo of happy children playing. We learn that he has been receiving several of these for some time.

Flashback to five years earlier. Ji-hwan is a literature undergraduate who works at a cafe. His hobby is photography. He tests his speed at putting together his camera and manages to beat his previous record. Looking into his viewfinder, he glimpses a beautiful face. As he attempts to take a picture of this girl smelling a rose, another girl, Gyung-hee, accidentally walks into the frame. She apologises for spoiling his shot. Then she and her friend, Soo-in, the one whom he saw earlier, sit at the cafe to eat. Ji-hwan watches them, having fallen in love with Soo-in at first sight.

The pair eventually leave the cafe. On a whim, Ji-hwan chases after their taxi on his bicycle. Gyung-hee feels hungry despite having eaten so recently so they stop at another cafe. Ji-hwan musters up his courage to confess his love to Soo-in. Gyung-hee is amused but Soo-in tells Ji-hwan that he is making her uncomfortable. Disappointed, Ji-hwan leaves the cafe but stops when he sees a clock shop. The girls are still in the cafe when they receive a note from a waiter. They turn and see Ji-hwan in the window, holding a clock in front of his face. They read the note. In it Ji-hwan says that he has turned the clock back by one hour and asks them to forget his love confession. But he hopes that the next time they meet, they will be friends. They yell their names to each other and then Ji-hwan runs off shyly, with the girls amused at his child-like antics.

Ji-hwan watches a soccer match between Japan and South Korea. The two girls appear and ask to join him. During the match, Ji-hwan sneaks looks at Soo-in but is caught out by Gyung-hee. As the match heats up, the trio become increasingly excited and when South Korea wins, they give each other high fives. Their friendship is now sealed.

Soo-in asks Gyung-hee to sleep over at her home. We learn that the two of them have been best friends since young. Gyung-hee is very energetic and outgoing. Soo-in is more reserved and shy. Soo-in is picking out clothes to give to Gyung-hee. When Gyung-hee protests, she says that she is losing weight although she does nothing. Gyung-hee tries to take her mind off this. They then have a conversation about kissing.

The next scenes are a montage of the trio's activities together and show them having a lot of fun. At a movie theater, they watch Il Postino when Ji-hwan realises Soo-in is not enjoying the movie. He realises that the man sitting behind her has placed his foot on the back of her seat. Standing up, he asks the man to remove his foot. At first, he refuses and a fight seems imminent. Gyung-hee and Soo-in stand up to back Ji-hwan up. Upon a second request, he relents and moves to another seat. Ji-hwan sits back down and his shaking lets on just how afraid he was. The two girls are impressed. Onscreen, a male character says, "I'm in love. It hurts but I want it to go on hurting."

Soo-in recommends the movie to her parents. Staring dreamily into space, she recites the aforementioned lines. Similarly, Gyung-hee starts reciting the same lines while on a bus. Both girls are obviously falling for Ji-hwan.
In the present, Ji-hwan visits his senior at the cafe where he used to work. He is passed a box of Ji-hwan's old photos. Ji-hwan says that he has not seen the girls for years and describes how his memories of them faded away to the point that he could not tell whether they were a figment of his imagination. He opens the box and sees a photograph of the three of them.

Flashback to the moment captured in the photograph. They are hanging out at the cafe. The girls are using personality tests in a magazine to find out his personality type. Ji-hwan leaves them to work on some errand. Gyung-hee tells Soo-in to go join him. When she is alone, she asks Ji-hwan for his blood type. Using this information, she looks up his predicted girlfriend type, which agrees with her personality type. Ji-hwan's senior joins her and she quickly hides the magazine. The two look out the window at Ji-hwan working happily with Soo-in and Ji-hwan's senior comments that Ji-hwan is extremely lucky for falling in love at first sight and having that love returned. Gyung-hee is hurt by this.

As Gyung-hee and Soo-in are walking home, they have a quarrel over Ji-hwan, ending with Gyung-hee accusing Soo-in of always acting weak to get attention. Soo-in, extremely hurt, returns home alone and says that she too is confused about the situation. She hears a pebble thrown at her window, looks out and sees Gyung-hee looking repentant. They decide to join Ji-hwan on a road trip despite their parents' objections.

On one of the nights in the tent, Soo-in watches Ji-hwan sleeping. She brings her hand to caress a mole on his ear. Later, the same night, Ji-hwan wakes up to find Soo-in missing. Gyung-hee is sucking her thumb in her sleep. Ji-hwan gets the urge to kiss her but stops at the last moment. He is very perplexed about his emotions.
In the morning, he finds Soo-in and they share stories about their first loves. Soo-in relates how she used to stay in a hospital when she was young. While there, she met a boy who was very sick but never complained about his condition. Instead, he took the opportunity to make mischief whenever he could. One time, he played a trick on the nurses and hid in her room. They became fast friends after that. Soo-in told everyone to call her by the boy's name in the belief that if she had his name, he would never truly leave her.

The trio sit on a hill looking at the scenery. Gyung-hee comments that it would look very beautiful in winter. They make a pact to return in winter time. It starts raining. Soo-in is very very cold and the others try to warm her up but she asks to stay a little longer. Ji-hwan carries her on her back and runs down the slope. They bring her to a hotel for her to recover from her cold. As Ji-hwan and Gyung-hee sit together on the balcony, Gyung-hee starts crying. She then scolds Ji-hwan for being uncomfortable due to her crying and kicks his legs until he has to trap her feet with his legs. The two of them kiss tentatively.

They return to Seoul. Ji-hwan and Gyung-hee are out together. Ji-hwan asks about Soo-in and Gyung-hee tells him that she is still in bed recovering. Ji-hwan makes the comment that being alone with Gyung-hee feels weird, almost like a date. Gyung-hee turns very moody and decides to go to a bar. She drinks a lot and when Ji-hwan tries to stop her, she scolds him, telling him that he shouldn't try to control her since he is not her boyfriend.

Gyung-hee and Soo-in meet Ji-hwan at a party held at the cafe. Soo-in is still ill. She goes to sing a song about the two people she loves most in the world, Ji-hwan and Gyung-hee. Ji-hwan and Gyung-hee are uncomfortable. After the song, Soo-in decides to leave early and asks Ji-hwan to walk her out. She asks him to close his eyes, then proceeds to feel his face, memorising its shape. Then she goes home.

Ji-hwan writes a letter to Soo-in, confessing that he is in love with Gyung-hee. Gyung-hee interrupts him. He gives her the letter, telling her to pass it to Soo-in and not to read it. Gyung-hee takes it reluctantly. She tells him to go before she gets into the taxi. Then, she slowly opens the letter, stops and then tears it up.
Gyung-hee visits Soo-in in the intensive care unit. Soo-in reads out a letter that she wrote to Gyung-hee. In it she tells Gyung-hee how she has been brave while receiving two injections and undergoing hemodialysis. Soo-in gives Gyung-hee a sealed letter to be given to Ji-hwan.

Ji-hwan receives a call and meets Gyung-hee at a bar. He asks about Gyung-hee's bandaged hand and about Soo-in. Gyung-hee tells him that the two of them have become uncomfortable around him. He agrees and tells her to leave if she has nothing else to say. Hours later, he stumbles out of the bar and falls in the snow. He punches the ground in anger and passes out. The next day, he finds himself in his room, with his hand bandaged.

In the present, Ji-hwan decides to search for the two girls. He visits their old high school and talks to a teacher who was also their old schoolmate. She tells him how they were envied and pitied by the whole school. They always missed classes because they were both very sick. Soo-in left Seoul and Gyung-hee died. Ji-hwan is shocked but decides to look for Soo-in.

He traces the letter he received to the location where the photo was taken. He hears his name called and turns around to find some children calling a dog. He smiles and greets the children.

A neighbour calls to a girl, telling her that they found Ji-hwan and she says," That's good." The camera reveals that it is Gyung-hee (Lee Eun Joo). She has lost a lot of weight and acts less lively, subdued even. She pushes her latest photograph into a handmade envelope and slips it under her bed.

Flashback to Soo-in's story about her first love. The little boy that she fell in love with has grown long hair and is actually a girl, who becomes her best friend. The two girls exchange names so that they can always be together. Therefore, Soo-in's real name is Gyung-hee and vice versa. But when they enter high school, the two of them have to use their official names which is why the teacher told Ji-hwan that Gyung-hee (Son Ye-Jin) died.

Gyung-hee walks out to find her dog, Ji-hwan. Instead, she finds the real Ji-hwan playing with the children. He sees her and walks towards her. In a very touching scene, he reaches out his hand and caresses her face and she does the same to him. The little tykes tease Gyung-hee for having a boyfriend, causing Ji-hwan to carry her on his back and run away from them.

At Ji-hwan's seniors wedding, the couple are congratulated for having found each other again. They take a photo together.

Ji-hwan opens a sealed letter. It is the one from Soo-in (Son Ye-Jin) that never made its way to him. In it, she says that she knows that he is in love with Gyung-hee and wishes them the best. She includes some tips on how handle Gyung-hee. Then she says that she may be going to a very far off place but she will carry the memory of them with her.

Flashblack to Soo-in, looking very weak, tells Gyung-hee that she loves her. Gyung-hee replies that she loves Soo-in back. Soo-in then passes away. Upon discovering Soo-in's death, Gyung-hee climbs into the bed and pulls the covers over the both of them. Later at Soo-in's funeral, she takes down the clock, smashes open the glass face and turns back the hands of the clock with her own bloodied hands, all the while crying uncontrollably.

Flashback to Gyung-hee treating and bandaging the unconscious Ji-hwan's hand. She kisses him and then leaves.

Ji-hwan opens up another letter. This time it's from Gyung-hee. She confesses that she tore up his letter to Soo-in and is relieved now that she has gotten rid of that burden. She thanks him for his kindness and passing on the love of photography to her. She thanks him for accepting her awkward kiss a long time ago. Then she says that she has been feeling very weak (Ji-hwan is crying by this time). We see Gyung-hee wiping away some blood from her nose. As the camera pans to the beautiful blue sky, her voiceover says that she will be seeing Soo-in soon. "Goodbye Ji-hwan. I loved you before and I love you now. Goodbye."

The last scene is the three of them in happier times, taking a photograph.

She's on Duty 2005

She's on Duty (잠복근무 Jambok-geunmu) is a 2005 South Korean film about a police detective who goes undercover in a high school to befriend the daughter of an elusive gangster. Despite being heavily marketed the film was generally considered a box office disappointment. It stars Kim Seon-ah as Chun Jae-in, Nam Sang-mi as Cha Seung-hee, Gong Yoo as Kang No-young, Kim Kap-su as Cha Young-jae, and Kim Sang-ho as Detective Kang.

Chun Jae-in, an orphan-turned-police detective, is assigned a job to go undercover in a high school to befriend Seung-hee, the daughter of notorious gangster Cha Young-jae, and protect her from any of her father's enemies who may want to use her as bait to get Cha Young-jae to do what they want, as well as get information about her father's work from her. At first, Jae-in is very reluctant to accept the job; however, her uncle, also a detective, pushes her at the last minute to take it. Jae-in is considered a loser when she first steps into her class, and the gang girls confront her afterward and challenge her to a fight at the backyard of the school. Jae-in, being a policewoman, easily beats them up. This earns her some sort of respect, although what Jae-in really wants is Seung-hee's friendship. She eventually gets this with the help of Kang No-young, a handsome classmate and next-door neighbor who she starts to like; however, Jae-in thinks her crush is wrong because of their age difference.

Meanwhile, a new teacher arrives at their school. Jae-in later is informed that he is also an undercover agent, working on her side. She becomes slightly suspicious of him and vaguely recognizes his face.

One day after school, Jae-in and other policemen spot Cha Young-jae outside an airport; they rush to catch him, but his rivals are also on the chase. They meet up in the parking lot, where Cha Young-jae is trapped. Suddenly a mysterious motorcycle rider speeds into the middle of the group and his motorcycle produces white smoke, therefore allowing Cha Young-jae to get away. Jae-in and other police go after the motorcycle driver, since Cha Young-jae has already gotten away. The undercover teacher also happens to be at the event and shoots at the motorcycle driver, but the driver gets away. Jae-in rushes after him, but the undercover teacher puts a gun to her head. She assumes it is not serious and runs after the driver, but all she finds is a watch strangely identical to that of No-young's. When she gets home, she knocks at No-young's door and confronts him about his watch. No-young shrugs it off and is playful; however, once he gets inside his apartment, he takes off his shirt, revealing a bullet wound to the camera. Jae-in does not know of this, but she suspects that No-young is also undercover as a spy.

Jae-in increasingly becomes more suspicious of No-young, although she is still head-over-heels about him. One day she challenges him to a Judo match during a physical education class at school. During the match, they vocally argue, although none of their classmates or the teacher seems to notice; by the end of the match, they both know of each other's real position as undercover agents. Jae-in thereafter confesses to Seung-hee that she is not really a schoolgirl, which in turn gets Seung-hee very upset.

Jae-in then receives news: her beloved uncle has been stabbed by an unknown person. She sobs, overcome with grief at the loss of her only family. The camera then shows her with Seung-hee in a car with a fellow policeman. The policeman betrays Jae-in and Seung-hee and leads them to the site where Cha Young-jae has been captured and is meeting with a rival gang leader. No-young arrives, and Jae-in teams up with him to fight off everyone. Jae-in goes to capture the rival gang leader; however, as she is handcuffing him, a gun is put to her head. She turns to see the undercover teacher, who was supposed to be on her side. He reveals to her that he was the one who stabbed her uncle, and she becomes overcome with rage. Meanwhile, No-young is wounded and running out of energy; as an undercover spy, he cannot reveal himself, for he would get caught. He slips away quietly as Jae-in punches the undercover teacher again and again. A police officer finally handcuffs the undercover teacher and leads him away. Cha Young-jae is sent off to an emergency room in an ambulance with Seung-hee, and Jae-in receives news that her uncle will get better.

The movie then cuts to a scene where Jae-in is undercover once again. It has been some time since the Cha Young-jae case, although the movie does not specifically say how long. This time, Jae-in is undercover as a singing nun. She bolts after a criminal down alleys and streets; finally, when she catches up with the criminal, she realizes he has already been knocked out by someone. She looks around and discovers No-young. She starts to punch him, but he blocks it. They reconcile and kiss.

The Classic 2002

The Classic tells the parallel love stories of a mother and daughter. The story of the mother is told partially in flashbacks.

The movie starts in the present day. The daughter, Ji-Hae (Son Ye-jin), is cleaning-up around her house when she comes across a box full of old letters and a diary that detail the story of her mother, Joo-Hee (who is also played by Son Ye-jin). Periodically in the movie, Ji-Hae reads one of these letters, which starts a flashback scene in which the story of the mother is told. These flashbacks are intertwined with Ji-Hae's own story, in which she falls for a fellow student, Sang-Min (Jo In-sung), who is involved with the school theater.

The movie tells the story of both relationships. The mother, Joo-Hee, visits the countryside as a student one summer and meets Joon-Ha (Jo Seung-woo). Together they explore the countryside, playing near a river which they both will always remember as their special place. When a storm starts they take shelter together under a tree, but not before Joo-Hee twists her ankle and is rendered helpless. Joon-Ha carries her on his back and they struggle home, only to be confronted by her angry parents. Before they separate, Joo-Hee gives him a necklace, which he keeps close as a precious reminder of their time together.

Unfortunately, as often happens in affairs of the heart, a third party prevents any deepening of their relationship. Joo-Hee has been promised by her parents as a bride to Tae-Soo, Joon-Ha's friend. But Tae-Soo, a noble friend, finds out about Joo-Hee and Joon-Ha's attraction for each other and helps the two communicate secretly by letting them use his own name in place of Joon-Ha's in their letters. When Tae-Soo's father finds this out, however, he beats Tae-Soo. Tae-Soo tries unsuccessfully to commit suicide so that his two friends can be together.

Meanwhile, in the present, Ji-Hae falls for Sang-Min in whom her friend Su-Kyeong (Lee Sang-in) is also very interested, but he seems not to notice. Then, in a sweet scene, they take shelter from the rain together under the same tree. He uses his coat to cover both of them and escorts her to where she needs to go. The moment, while magical, does not go anywhere as she feels his help was only due to his generous nature and not from any feelings for her on his part.

Back in the past, Joon-Ha is guilt-ridden over his friend's attempted suicide and Joo-Hee's own guilt. Determined to prevent any more hurt to her, Joon-Ha joins the army and goes to Vietnam. There he loses his eyesight while he tries to retrieve the necklace Joo-Hee had given him. When he returns to Korea, he meets again with Joo-Hee, and, trying to hide his blindness, convinces her he has married in the hope she will move on with her life. Though heart broken that their relationship cannot continue, she does move on and eventually marries Tae-Soo, Joon-Ha's kind friend. After they have been married for several years and have a young daughter (Ji-Hae) Joo-Hee is approached by friends of Joon-Ha, who relate Joon-Ha's last wish: that his ashes be scattered by Joo-Hee in the river, now a reservoir, where they first met. She then finds out that Joon-Ha already had a son the same age as her daughter. The heart-break is too much and she cries.

In the present, Ji-Hae's own story unfolds. Sang-Min reveals his true feelings for Ji-Hae - feelings that mirror her own. It is also revealed that their taking shelter together during the storm was no accident: he had purposely left his umbrella behind in a shop so that he could join her under the tree. Then, when Ji-Hae pensively reveals her mother's story to him, tears stream down his face. Silently he lifts a necklace from around his neck and places it around hers. It is the necklace that Ji-Hae's mother, Joo-Hee, had given to Joon-Ha when they met. The circle is completed: Joo-Hee's daughter and Joon-Ha's son have fallen in love.
